Dr. Thomas Whitfield - FAQ

Thank you for inquiring about therapy with Dr. Thomas Whitfield. Here are answers to some of the most common questions he receives about working together.

Is he currently accepting new clients.

Yes, Dr. Whitfield is currently accepting new clients, however there is a waitlist for new clients. New clients can expect an approximate 3-6 month wait to begin therapy with Dr. Whitfield. The initial consultation to see if you’re a match for therapy may take place before that. If you’d like to be added to his waitlist, please click here or send an email to info@cbtemdrassociates.com.

Can he recommend other therapists for treatment?

Absolutely! Dr. Whitfield has a staff of therapists that cover a variety of needs, and all are trained in CBT and EMDR. These therapist’s work is overseen by Dr. Whitfield directly.

How long are session?

Typically, individual sessions are 45 minutes long while couples’ sessions are 60 minutes. If you are doing trauma work as an individual, you may also be asked to schedule for 60 minutes so there is extra time available to clear up any residual emotions that linger.

Do you do weekly or bi-weekly?

Clients are always encouraged to begin with weekly sessions, then as symptoms begin to decrease the client and therapist will discuss going to bi-weekly. If you begin therapy by engaging at a bi-weekly cadence you are more likely to see fewer results and stop therapy prematurely. It’s like going to the gym once a week as opposed to a few times a week. Yes, you may see some results, but they will be slower and much less motivating.

How many sessions do people generally do?

The length of treatment is determined by a multitude of variables, including severity of symptoms, client’s readiness for change, and work done outside of the session. Clients who are ready for change, practice skills outside of session, and regularly attend sessions tend to see the quickest results.

Does Dr. Thomas Whitfield take my insurance?

He is an out-of-network (OON) provider, meaning that he does not work directly with any insurance company and is out-of-network for all insurance companies. Clients that have OON coverage generally receive 50-90% back of the total cost after their deductible is met. If you’re unsure of what your coverage is, you may want to reach out to your provider and inquire further.

To find out more about your network coverage, we encourage you to follow these steps:

1.    Call your insurance provider at the number listed on the back of your insurance card.

2.    Ask your provider what percentage is covered for “out-of-network” or “non-participating providers.”

3.    Ask your provider what the “maximum allowed amount” is per session (this is sometimes referred to as “reasonable and customary fees”) for zip code 10037 for a licensed psychologist. If they ask, the CPT/procedure code is 90834 for individual psychotherapy and 90847 for couples/family psychotherapy.

4.    Ask your provider if you have a deductible for an out-of-network provider and how much it is.
