Frequently Asked Questions

 How long are session?

Typically, individual sessions are 45 minutes long while couples’ sessions are 60 minutes. If you are doing trauma work as an individual, you may also be asked to schedule for 60 minutes so there is extra time available to clear up any residual emotions that linger.

Do you do weekly or bi-weekly?

Clients are always encouraged to begin with weekly sessions, then as symptoms begin to decrease the client and therapist will discuss going to bi-weekly. If you begin therapy by engaging at a bi-weekly cadence you are more likely to see fewer results and stop therapy prematurely. It’s like going to the gym once a week as opposed to a few times a week. Yes, you may see some results, but they will be slower and much less motivating.

How many sessions do people generally do?

The length of treatment is determined by a multitude of variables, including severity of symptoms, client’s readiness for change, and work done outside of the session. Clients who are ready for change, practice skills outside of session, and regularly attend sessions tend to see the quickest results.

 Do you take my insurance?

We are considered “out-of-network” providers for all insurance plans. What this means is that you are responsible for paying the full fee upfront for each session. At the end of every month, we will either provide you with an invoice (also known as a “superbill”) which you will then submit to your insurance company for reimbursement, or we can submit a claim to your insurance on your behalf. Depending on your plan, you will usually get a percentage of what you already paid back to you, which can help offset the out-of-pocket cost of therapy.

To find out more about your network coverage, we encourage you to follow these steps:

1.    Call your insurance provider at the number listed on the back of your insurance card.

2.    Ask your provider what percentage is covered for “out-of-network” or “non-participating providers.”

3.    Ask your provider what the “maximum allowed amount” is per session (this is sometimes referred to as “reasonable and customary fees”) for zip code 10037 for a licensed psychologist. If they ask, the CPT/procedure code is 90834 for individual psychotherapy and 90847 for couples/family psychotherapy.

4.    Ask your provider if you have a deductible for an out-of-network provider and how much it is.

I’ve never done therapy, what does a session even look like?

Therapy sessions at CBT / EMDR Associates are most often structured in nature, beginning with setting an agenda at the beginning of each session, going over any work that was accomplished between sessions, checking for new insights, and then acquiring/mastering new tools. In addition, there is always room for exploration and deeper understanding of oneself.

What happens if I need to talk between sessions?

Things come up, and therapist know that. If you need to talk between sessions, we recommend sending your therapist an email or text requesting time to talk. Please keep in mind that there may be an additional charge for time outside of session. Your therapist will discuss this with you before so there are no surprises.

Can I text my therapist?

It is possible to text your therapist, however it should be limited to logistical questions. Examples are changing appointment times, requesting a phone call, or other nonclinical questions. If you are experiencing an emergency texting is not the best way to contact your therapist.

What if I don’t get along with my therapist?

Although we do our best to match you with a therapist that we think will meet your specific individual needs, not everyone will be a match. If that’s the case, we will do our best to match you with someone else within CBT / EMDR Associates or recommend someone else outside of our practice.

Can you prescribe me medication?

At CBT / EMDR Associates we do not prescribe medication, but we know many wonderful providers around the New York area and are able to offer great recommendations!

 How do you accept payment?

Clients are required to keep a credit card on file; however, we can accept other forms of payment including checks, money orders, etc. We also accept payment from HSA/FSA accounts.
